This site is for all that like Michigan State University and want to stay updated on current events at the school and the surrounding community. The site is designed and maintained by a former Michigan Stater so the website name is appropriate as a “michigan stater”. Other than as an alumni, this site is not affiliated with the university.
Indeed, the first nickname for the school was “michigan staters” after a local contest was held in 1925. Apparently, the sports writers from the local papers did not like the name and wanted something shorter. They eventually decided on the current name “Spartans”.
